The Advantages of Wearing a Weight Lifting Belt Wearing a weight lifting belt will significantly lower the risk of back injury during exercise. Weight lifting belts supply an increased level of safety, while ensuring that performance is not sacrificed. Abdominal muscles will help to support the weight being lifted, decreasing the amount of stress placed on the back. Belts should be worn tightly around the waist, but not tight enough that air supply is cut off. You should not be able to bend your back while doing deadlifts. The belt should be loosened between sets in order to allow increased blood pressure to return to normal. Weight lifting belts should be worn when lifting heavy material either for an occupation or while working out. A belt should be worn when performing squats, deadlifts, overhead presses, and bench presses with a large amount of weight. Do not use the belt when executing light and routine exercises, since the belt may prevent muscles from fully developing.
